London government reorganisation in 1965  removed an ancient anomaly - part of Woolwich (Kent) that lay in Essex.

River Lea Police

The River Lea forms Newham's western boundary and it once had its own police force - the Lea Navigation Police.

Old Parish Church, East Ham.

The ancient parish church of St Mary Magdalene was built in Norman times and is still in use today. It has one of the best preserved Norman Arches in the country and the churchyard is almost 10 acres. This image c.1900.
