Note: The Local Government Act 2000 introduced the option of directly-elected mayors for local authorities in England and Wales. To adopt this system the electorate had first to be consulted by referendum. Newham voted for system and Sir Robin Wales was then voted in as the first elected mayor of Newham. Following this, the office of Civic Ambassador was established, taking up the position of the more ancient office of ceremonial mayor who was, inter alia, chairman of the council. The office of Civic Ambassador was itself discontinued at the end of the 2008/09 municipal year.
