Newham (South), 1965

East Ham and West Ham at the time of the formation of Newham in 1965.

Note that there were two small areas in the south of the Borough that were originally part of Kent (later in the borough of Woolwich). This dates back to the 11th Century when Hamar, sheriff of Kent owned land on this side of the Thames, and included it in his shrievalty. This arrangemant  continued under various changes in local government until the London Governmant Act came into force on 1st April, 1965, sweeping away much of the old system of boroughs and forming the new London Boroughs.
