My name's Jenny and I was born in Stratford in 1949, lived in Maryland Park, went to Maryland Primary and then Stratford Grammar. Moved to Upton Park in the 60's and now exiled to Swindon.  Have been tracing my family tree and have been fascinated by this site and the changes to the area since I left.  Look forward to speaking to more of you.

So good to hear from those who remember Maryland Park.  Can't believe you still live there E15 boy! I was so sad and angry when my Nan's house was compulsory purchased just to extend the school playground, it broke her heart.  We lived at 42, which last time I went there is just a patch of grass, what a waste of a decent house!

This is a great site, really enjoying reading the posts.

As you can imagine it is slightly congested in the local area at the moment........

I think there is something going on in Stratford over the next 2 weeks but not too sure!!!!!  Wink

Slightly is an understaement. at 08-00 yesterday the Bus lane in West Ham Lane had come to a complete standstill with it looking more like carpark as about 20 buses in Convoy that had come to a complete halt. A 17-00 last night it was not much better

Hi To All

My Name is David Hewitt  i was born  in 1945 at 17 Streatfield  Ave East Ham, i went to Napier Jnr school  and Thomas Lethaby Secondary Modern school , After school i joined the merchant navy and in 1963 i jumped ship in Australia were i have been ever since , I have been married to my wife Judy since 1966  and we have had three children all are now married and have blessed us with numerous grandchildren, I recently retired and have moved from Sydney to the Gold coast in Queensland .  My Father was Charlie Hewitt (Now Deceased ) and was well known around the London area he  worked as a bus, coach ,and lorry driver and worked for Battens coaches he also played the piano and the piano accordion in most pubs in the area and was busker with a group of mates that used to dress up as black and white minstrels and play along the beaches at Southend  during the summer months, some people might also remember him dressed up as father Christmas with his sack full of small kiddy parcels ringing his bell at East Ham markets at sixpence a go.

I was never introduced to any of my fathers family for some reason or another and i would like to find some of them if possible with a little help from the people on the forum.  Cheers Dave

Welcome Dave,
Interesting way to enter Australia, what ship did you sail on ?. I remember when I was at Sea we used to have a few jumpers, one even in Apartheid South Africa,to be with his coloured girlfriend.
On British t.v we have a couple of Emmigration programmes doing the rounds about Aus and New Zealand and we have a bit of a giggle over them , and having lived in N.Z. for 3 years and visited Aus on many occasions, we still enjoy it back in the little ol' U.K.
Enjoy your viewing of the Olympics and I reacon you won't recognise much of the east end you remember from 63 .
Anyway again welcome aboard Blue .

  All the best Ed

Hi
   Ed
Thanks for your welcome message, i jumped ship from a Port Line Ship called the  "Port Fairy ", i was originally going to leave the ship in Canada which i thought was a marvelous place but i was a bit worried that most of the places we went to were all French Canadian ports and i could not speak french and they really do not like the British ! .

Hi Dave,
Sorry to keep on the Shipping theme, there are a few of us old Shipping chaps on this site, but your Ships name doe's seem a bit inappropriate given the number of : steam Queens : away at sea at that time.Iworked in the Royal Docks during the 60's and remember loads of Port Ships berthed along the Sth Side K.G.V.
Alonside these berths now is the Docklands Light Railway System ,and a Station called King George V which then tunnels under the River to come out at Woolwich Arsenal.
Did you know your ship was scrapped in 65 ? and I'm assuming you sailed from the Royals , coming from East Ham.

Hi fellas, hope you don't mind me butting in on your shipping memories but
Port Fairy is a place on the coat just S.E. of Adelaide.  I actually went there this year! My son lives in Sydney and my husband & I were doing a trip from Adelaide along the coast back to Sydney, visiting long lost family who moved there in the 1860's.
