I have recently been reading "The War on Our Doorstep" by Harriet Salisbury, The book relates to the East End of London and not solely the Newham area but is one that I think many members of the forum would find interesting. It details memories of the East End, including Newham and the Docks,  from the days of the 1st World War through to the 1950s and 60s. These memories come directly from the community and give a fascinating insight into life in the East End. It is a book which can be picked up and put down as time allows without the necessity to think I must finish this chapter.

It is published by Ebury Publishing Co and the ISBN reference is ISBN 978-0-091-94150-5

Hi Tinpot10

THE WAR ON OUR DOORSTEP

If you follow this link and then click on the book cover on the left you can read quite a bit of the Intro to the book & some of the content.

You can download a free version of Kindle to use on your PC and then download the book for about £4.74
