MBrennan asked, in relation to a spam message posted on the forum at 07:04 this morning:

I thought there was an option with this forum software to get moderator approval for new members? - You could tell in one sentence whether someone was a troll or a hammer?

The registration process on this forum is automated but there is an efficient spam-guard facility which highlights and blocks bad IPs etc, whilst some are referred for approval. I monitor the site at least 4 or 5 times a day, but with the best will in the world I cannot be on hand 24 hours a day. Consequently a very small number of spammers do beat the system but are removed manually and banned.

To date:
48,599 spammers have been automatically blocked from joining the forum
928 spammers have been manually banned from the forum
250+ spammers are manually rejected on a daily basis

Thanks for that.

I think some of them must pay people to sit and manually spam to get around security  Undecided

Normally whenever I see a spam message I simply click the "report to moderator" button on the bottom right of the message and type Spam in the input box. This should at least flag the message up to admin at an early stage.
