I would just like to remind you all that the Newham Story Forum is for discussing local and family history matters. As a number of threads are straying into general chat I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to please keep the posts on topic and related to Newham’s history.

  Apologies,
I am one of those who are feeling guilty re your comments.

I have posted one just 1/2hr. ago which would not be considered proper NEWHAM history.

Will stop this habit as I do see where you are coming from and will mend my ways.

Thank you for our great Forum

Hi Louise,

I would have thought that you have little to worry about in terms of straying into general chat. Everything you say is invariably proper Newham history. In terms of history, if you step outside the box for a moment and consider what history is. The more grander end of the scale you have the kings, politicians and their policies with effects, battles, wars and so on. It is the other end of the scale, the more local things that get overlooked. I would certainly argue that Newham's history certainly does not always end at the borough boundary. Yourself like many others were wartime evacuees and I would have thought for instances that your experiences during evacuation are very much part of Newham's history. On a more mundane level, your memories of the move from net to fabric curtains is still history, as are clothes and fashion. Nothing in our history ever stands still and future generations will always want to know when and why we did things. Such comments will give future historians a greater appreciation of circumstances.

We have an era of our history after the Romans left called "The Dark Ages". They are dark as very little documentation survives from that period if it existed at all. In that era, Anglo-Saxons and the Norsemen who settled in large tracts of the country had the habit of committing thing to memory rather than paper. That is why so much myth like the Arthurian story has been conjured up to help explain that period of the unknown. When you think about it, without our written thoughts no matter on how mundane a level, we would create a new dark age in terms of certain aspects of our history.

Please never refrain from writing what you actually feel, that is one of the most important gifts we have. Our memories are the futures history. Admin will always advise us if we are starting to stray into chat line type areas.

Louise,
You certainly have nothing to reproach yourself about, given your own admission that you were new to the Internet and this Site when you joined . Ithink we can all lay claim to have drifted off the subject at some time, and you only have to look back to earlier posts in 2008 to see that.
What a Top Lady you are to put your hand up and post it, and also thanks to Mick , for drawing our attention to this.

 All the best Ed

     MickG & Ed styles,

Many thanks for those reassuring comments

I know it may seem un-becoming for a Woman of my mature years to feel so upset,
but coming across this Forum and being accepted has made a great deal of difference
to my life (Living as I do out in the Country) and London to most of them is a place where the
Queen lives and the Olympic Games are coming to..
For me it has been like coming home to a place long forgotten other than in my memories
which I love to share with anyone who is interested.

      Regards to all Louise.

Bless you Louise ....

Memories are not simply facts ...  they are also the emotions that attach themselves to the facts, dates, buildings and events of yesteryear and give them life and humanity.

Long may you continue to inject life into dusty memories and take us all along on the wonderful journey to your past and in fact to the mirror image of our own individual pasts.

You share so much with us all and your generosity of spirit is much appreciated by me and I'm sure everyone else.

with affection

Louise

Being new to the forum and one of the younger ones (that feels good!) your posts are so great to read. Some of the things are memories that my mum would have had but now long forgotten.
Keep posting and keep bringing smiles and happy memories.

Rennay sorry! for delay in answering your very much appreciated Post.

Have had several appointments with the NHS and it has cut down a lot of my timer for Posting.

Your words of kindness meant a lot.

Such a pity that such a lovely, intelligent and respectful poster be made to feel that she is doing something wrong by putting her feelings and (however old) memories on this site..........typical newham.  shame on you.

    Cool Dear Jayne,
Thank you so much for your Post.

I am sorry you cannot ask Mum any more of her memories, I bet she must have had some Good Ones?
It was such a lovely compliment to be compared with her.

Jayne I have been on line now for about 18months, but even on the Forum I still get very lost.

We shall post again I am sure in the future, so until then Take Care.
         Regards Louise.

I don't think you did anything wrong Louise. I love reading your posts that bring the past to life. Much better than reading dry facts & figures  Cheesy

This is just my experience of using forums since 1997. I think a good compromise is to keep one section for non-related chat (as long as it has some relevence.

It would be great if just one section could be kept for 'general nostalgia' and people could choose to read the section or not. I don't remember there being a fence around Newham when I lived there but it does feel that way sometimes on here. It would be a shame to miss interesting things because they aren't 100% Newham related, although they are things experienced by Newham people.

At the same time...

I know it is a difficult thing for moderators to juggle. I have seen a few forums turn into mayhem (slight exaggeration but more like people talking about what they are having for their tea etc  Cheesy) when there have been no rules/guidelines.

I wouldn't be a moderator for 'all the tea in China'  Grin

PS - There is actually a website called http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com/biscuits/index.php3 if people do want to read about biscuits and cakes  Grin

What is the cut off date that we are allowed to post from??

Can you advise us?? as we want to follow your RULES but they are vague to say the least.............
