I suspect that, like me, they find the new board totally different to the old one which was a lot more user friendly than the new one. The old board had such a good lay-out that even the people with very basic computer skills (like me) found it very easy to use. The new board may have solved the SPAM problem but it has also lost a lot of old posters. I hope they all come back as I loved to read the excellent postings.
Perhaps because it is the holiday season too that many people have other things to do. I look forward to them all coming back to the site when the dark nights re-appear, which won't be too long now.

I tried to lock in to the Forum and was totally gobsmacked at what I saw! Is this a replacement of the old, very old-fogie-friendly forum then?
I haven't managed to look into the site for many months so had no idea that there was going to be a change of format.
I am still trying to find my way around here. I have only just started, and will now look around for Ray, Mary, Kathy, Stan, Tom, and all the other faithfuls too numerous to mention. Hope to find them here.

Lets face it the new site is extremely well thoughtout and professional done but somehow it has lost the spontenanity of the previous site.  I have noticed that hardly any women are posting on the new site and if it wasn't for Stan and Roger's regular imputs there would be hardly anything worth reading.  Sure many subjects have been done to death previously on the old site and the new site is now ready for more detailed memories to be placed on it and is reliant on the input of all of us who were born and bred in West Ham (or should I say Newham).   I know it is not a chat site but the old site did contain a certain amount of chat before it was erased but we did read it and sometimes have a laugh at what had been written. I feel that the c...ney humour is not coming through to this site and I kinda of miss it.  I mean to say I am even starting to miss Fred and the responses he revoked.

It's now all about content, isn't it, Pauline? It's no longer idle chat about such as, "Who lived at no. 71?"

On the old History Board there were those, such as Ray Savory, who shouted the odds about preserving the old West/EastHam heritage. "The Spotted Dog" was a prime target. They are now conspicuous by their abscence.

I think this relatively new website needs more publicity amongst old West/EastHam residents so it is up to us to publicise it. I have already passed it on to my contacts.

It was who lived at No 71 and what went on in that house that made up the true history of West Ham.  My grand-dad was an SP Bookie at No 16  and became the first licenced Book Maker in London.

The arrival of the CID and carting off grannie in his place, with the message for him to turn himself in and they would release Gran.............Thats the history Bert......

I would share many more stories of my extended family and their life in Plaistow - but I reckon you would consider it 'chit chat'. Perhaps all posts should be sent to you first for approval.

Much of the 'chit chat' that offends you so much, brought back great memories to me, including the taste of della mura lemon icecream and hot dogs in the interval at the Bolyen Odean as well as the 6d orange ice from the usherette - now what happened to the usherettes that used to get swamped in the intervals..........now thats another memory I just recalled.......can just see them with their torches searching thru their trays..........now what else did they sell.

Quite pleased that memory came back and once again I am sitting in the pictures, smoke and all, watching two movies, courting couples up the back row..........Hah, one girlfriend I know went out with a boy to the pictures, excused herself to go to the bathroom and couldnt find where her seat was when she came back cos the lights had gone down........so got the bus home.....that poor boy must have wondered what he had done to offend her..........

I hope some  will enjoy this 'chit chat' and 'Thank Goodness' for Stan and Roger, the forum would be a sad place without their contributions thats for sure.

Possibly too busy actually DOING something about it instead of just moaning all the time about content. I repeat my question of an earlier post.
What have you done to physically preserve the history, social history and heritage of Newham?

Hi Pauline and all posters, I only found out about this site by accident, I am a new poster. Let me assure you all that this site is a breath of fresh air, I have already been in contact with Stan who I had'nt spoken to for 44 years. I dont care if its a chit chat or posting something historical, its all the same to me. There are few posting that I dont find interesting and informative. "ROCK ON" Lewis

Barry says what have we done physically towards the preserving of Newham history.

Well physically I guess I gave birth to two children in Howards Road Maternity Hospital.  I have given my children pride in the knowledge that they were born in West Ham and that their grandparents and great grandparents worked hard, had large families and survived the bombing during the war.  By the way I was born on the 3 September 1940 during a bombing raid and my mother told me that the first sound I heard was the sound of a bomb dropping - so that was my welcome to the world and Plaistow.

My husband and I will be celebrating our Golden Wedding this month and I will recall being married at 1.45 at St Andrews Church (near the Greengate)by the Rev Eric Shipton and having a home wedding with all the guests packed into the house and garden with two pianos being played and everyone singing their heads off and dancing in the street with the neighbours joining in.  There could not have been a better wedding party.

All I can do now Barry is add to the memories I have of my childhood on this site.  What is happening to Newham currently is of no interest here.  Although down the track it would be of historical data to know people's opinions of what is happening in Newham today - even just their opinions of the Olympics coming into their backyard would be quite interesting to read.

And should the Spotted Dog survive when all others have been torned down then we must thank Ray for his constant efforts in this regard.

Bert
I think you are bang out of order, regarding Ray and his absence from this Board. I was a Poster on the Old Site for a couple of years, and found Ray a  most knowledgable and genuine bloke on most matters  concerning East - West Ham History.
He is still campaigning for OUR  Heritage Museum to be built in time for the Olympics , even you must agree that's a worthwhile project. I'm sure Ray doesn't need me to jump to his defence, but having been a guest at his House, and seeing the work he puts in researching and campaigning, I know he is passionate about our History in Newham, so I say get the 'Full Picture' Bert before you comment

Dear oh dear, did we all get out of bed the wrong side yesterday?,As a new boy, I joined the old site one month before it change its format and really enjoyed the banter, memories even who lived in 71 , the new site came into being, and i , like a few other one finger computer geeks am finding the new site slightly harder to get around, but I am enjoying the banter, help that you posters put over to others, and just as important to each individual our own piece of personal history, I quote from that great poster Ray Savory,The Newham Debates is for general chat etc Date Monday 9 June 2008. It doesnt bother me to to read about 71 ? there are loads of loverly people with memories in all shapes and sizes, history, ( IM a East Hammer), and most of all our wonderful sense of humour. I did read that R S. is very busy doing things for the Newham, and I did like Paulines post along with a few others great, by the way,  who did live in 71?
