Not sure if everyone is aware, but Manzes have an online shop & deliver anywhere in the UK mainland & NI. - http://manze.co.uk/It's a bit pricey though.

Thanks Fizzbin. It is expensive but includes delivery, so 2 lots of double pie, double mash and liquor is no more expensive than a chinese or Indian takeaway (or cardboard AKA Domino pizza!) so for a treat it would be OK I suppose - so much for cheap food for the poor! I don't know anyone here that loves it so will probably try the Cookes one from sainsbury's and the shop in Herne Bay. Mark

Hi It was great to see a photo of my old pie & mash shop, lediards of stratford E15, I started going in there in 1950s I Loved their pies the pastry seemed to be a bit burnt on the top which i liked,
Looking at the photo it looks to be a late photo, because looking through the right hand window the partion is not there, can you remember years ago when you used to have to Queue around a metal bar where the partion was, the wood partion i remember had loads of round holes where people had worn it away with a coin,i remember a little old lady that used to collect the plates, she wore a white coat and always had a hair net on, i also remember the little upstairs room , i can remember the Queue going right outside in west ham lane going past salmons the hardware shop ,if it was that busy he used to open the door which was in the little upstairs room, which led upstairs where there was loads more tables and chairs. Barry

I've just had one of those Sainsbury Cooks Pie 'n Mash for lunch.
Having opened the packet and been shocked by the very small size of the Pie, I was pleasantly suprised by the taste and quality.
For a decent nosh for 1 you do need 2 packs as said above. I paid £1.79, so 2 will be £3.58, not too bad I think.

I will have to have a look in Sainsbury's. I do my 'big shop' in Tesco (especially recently with the £5 off voucher + 10p a litre off petrol ) and tend to only go to Sainsbury's for top up shops or if cat food is on offer I was thinking the other day when around 1970, my mum saying it was getting hard to make a meal for 6 of us for under £1 Although having said that, I was checking facts with her recently. I thought my memory was playing tricks. I said to her that I thought I remembered being sent to the shop for 3/4lb of mince for a pie or 1lb of braising steak for a big pot of stew. She said I had remembered correctly. She always made meals the way she was taught. A family mince meat pie also had plenty of grated carrot & onion in so 3/4lb was plenty for a famiiy sized pie - incredible to think that is the amount of meat some people have in a single burger now! (I have the 10oz Wetherspoons steak sometimes ) - I remember I used to love her pies. If there was any left, I used to take it to work to have cold for lunch. Likewise the stew meat. She said that a pound of meat goes a long way in a stew with plenty of veg, although no matter how hard up she was, she always bought braising steak because stewing steak was a false economy I'm sure the diet of a small amount of meat with lots of veg was a lot healthier than what many eat now - ie as much meat in a day as people used to eat in a week.

Finally tried the Cooks Pie & Mash from Sainsbury's. Due to hunger & impatience I microwaved it and (as I knew it would be) the pie was soft, but it definitely 'scratched the itch' The pie is quite small as is the mash portion, but it was fine for a lunch Although I remember it was £1.79 a couple of weeks ago - now up to £2.29 - a 20% hike So I'm sure if you bake it, the pies would be nicer. Probably the best bet is to bake the pie and microwave the mash & liquor. I still want to try the real thing but I think I will keep a couple in the freezer.

Hi !
Manze pie & mash, I think would be great for a special evening, with some real old cockney music, may be when my brother's visit. Before Ged left West Ham, he would always bring Pie & Mash down with him, in a cool box. Will take the details.
This is my mother, also called Nell, having a Cockney Evening, she was 95 years old at the time.

I think I will pass on the music Nell I remember my aunt Maureen & Uncle Dave had quite a lot of parties in Jedburgh Road and there was always a session of "Knees up Mother Brown" and "I'm forever blowing bubbles" as well as the 'trendy' stuff like "Bits & Pieces" As for the Pie & Mash. I would order the proper stuff online but don't really know anyone that likes it, except my brothers & sister but they are all in Essex. The local sailing club are having a pie & mash night but I think you have to be a member.

Not really my cup of tea Off topic, but I was outside Sainsbury's this morning and two 'old dears' were sitting on the bench. One of them was looking at one of those 'TV chat' type magazines. She pointed to a teenager on the cover to her friend. In complete eastend deadpan. Her friend said "I don't know who that is. Show me a photo of Gracie Fields and I'll know who is"

There was a pie and mash shop in Pelly Road (?) I believe. Run by our bike club president in the '50's. I was the washer up!

That's right Brian. it was in fact situated just off Pelly in Stratford Road. It was run by Peggy and Percy Jones. If memory serves it was a tasty bit of pie and mash. He was president of the Penguin Cycling Club, not to be confused with the Portway Penguins which was a very successful cycle speedway club!

I used to go to the Pie and Mash shop in Stratford Road when I was a kid.In the school holidays with my Mum and Dad out at work,I would be left the money and take myself up to Stratford Rd from Corporation Street where we lived. If I can remember right, the counter and tables had marble tops and there were also old fashiond mirrors on the walls, all very Victorian in style. This was about sixty years ago.
