Didn't know what catagory to put this post in but here goes anyway.
I heard that even though there has been a number of shootings and stabbings in the past month or six weeks the media have been told not to report this in the News..........I thought that maybe it was not true until I started looking for any sign of these crimes being reported only to find no trace. One of the people attacked was a family friend and that did not make the local paper let alone the nationals. Is there any truth in these comments? as local residents I think we have a right to know.

There isn’t a category for this type of message, as these forums are for talking about local and family history. The ones who would know if there is media blackout on street crime in this area, are the police and the politicians, but I don’t suppose that they would own up to it anyway.
I would hazard a guess that if there is a media blackout that it would also apply to the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, as they, like Newham, are adjacent to the Olympic Park – need I say any more!

I agree with you Kathy - One of my friends still serving in the Met told me that they are going to have a 'ring of steel' around the environs of the olympic stadium. He tells me that it is partly anti terrorism but mainly to keep the locals from robbing the spectators - he was deadly serious.

I think the decision came from a much higher authority than K division. Almost certainly it would have come from Scotland Yard on the instructions of the home-office. I have heard that there is already a lot of crime of that sort in the new Westfield centre.

Crime in stratford!! what a newsflash
Now the police will be under scrutiny its all hands to the pump..............don't worry about before and after as long as the powers that be are satisfied when the cameras are on them. But don't fret we locals are made of goodstuff and are not scared of the impending throngs of criminals that we did not have before invading our locality!! I will set me mum on them.

Hi e15Boy, first time speaking, Have posted before that Stratford to me coming from Hermit Road, meant there was a good Pawn Shop; for Mum to do her bit of business, and if it was good a Pie & Mash for me at the end. (Looking back I would give the world for her not to have to Pawn. I read a lot of your posts re Stratford of to-day and could not imagine what might have changed from my memories of yesterday? where would Yardley's have been in this rebuild that I saw? Took a long stroll yesterday with the help of GOOGLE from Ye Old Black Bull, along to Stratford Centre, Up West Ham Lane, to High Street Bus Station, (I only wish we had Bus Stations like that in these parts of the world,) on to the Great Eastern Road and the Railway Station. I was completely surprised at what I saw it looked great?? have I been fooled? The Broadway also looked in very good shape and it seemed bigger and less congested than what I remember from a 9/10 year old. in 1935/9. I done a similar stroll one afternoon from East Ham Town Hall all the way down High Street South to Manor Park right up to the Station and found that a much more daunting experience. I know someone will put me right about these statements ? Louise

You mention that using Google Street View you had a wander around Stratford but I thought I would point out that what you would have seen is not really up to date and there is a lot missing on these old satelite images. You cannot see Westfield and the Olympic Park is still in it's early stages and lots of the new high rise flats.
You'll have to come for look round Westfield and do a tour of Stratford, Canning Town and Custom House.

I have done a few 'google walks' and wonder if it is better to remember things as they were. One of my favourite shops on the corner of High St South and Norman Road was called Meads. Mr & Mrs Mead wore starched white jackets and carved breaded ham off the bone. The smells in the shop were mouth watering. Now it is a grubby-looking shop called O'Obade food & wine. My old cubs hall next to St Mary Magdalene is still there

Although not relatiing to the original post I would echo Kathy's thoughts on her post of yesterday. Google maps is great for many things but it only records the one moment in time when the "Google Vehicle" was in the area. At the time Hornchurch was photographed I was redecorating some rooms at the front of my home consequently the house on Google shows it with no curtains at the windows which could be embarassing!
We all remember East and West Ham fondly from our childhood and it is natural to have the yearning to put things back as they were. Some of the so called improvements we will not like but a few weeks ago I spent an afternoon with some friwnds walking from Beckton via the Sir Steve Redrave Bridge through the Royal Albert and King George V Docks to Woolwich and then on to Greenwich. Whilst the demise of the docks and other industries in the area is regretted it would not have been possible to do that walk in the 1950s.

Kath,MBrennan,&Doug. I sure would like to visit a lot of the old sites I once trod. If I had had my Computer say 10years ago it might have been possible then. But being of very senior years and problems with eyesight and walking, felt looking at Google would give me a little idea of Stratford to-day (The Google film was shot in 2002). and as stated thought the area looked good? Kathy with your answer I wonder whether your are saying that if I saw these new buildings I would appreciate them and think them to be an improvement or the other way round that they are making matters worse?
MBrennan & Doug, I agree it is sometimes better to have memories and not go for a reality check, but my memories are so old that there must be a difference, GOOD OR BAD and I wanted to see them if possible. And Google was the only way I knew how but your wise words are taken on board re other strolls along memory lanes.
Thanks for answers Louise.

Doug, I'm assuming your walk took you across part of the " Albert" dock Basin and the K.G.V. Dock towards Nth Woolwich , then onto Greenwich.I can't understand your comment about this not being possible in the 50's . There has always been a Road from old Beckton via the " Ferndale " pub at Cyprus over the Swing Brige ,( sadly the Sir Redgrave Bridge ) has replaced this then pass No 15 Gate the Middle Road to both Docks then over the Basscule Brige by Harland & Wolff ,past the " Round House " and ontowards the Ferry. I would argue that back then, it would have been a far more interesting walk with the Royals in full flow ,and a chance of getting a dreaded Bridger, than todays walk with the odd Plane taking off and landing, I often go back around here , and not wishing to upset the people who now live there,I find this area lifeless, but there again I can remember when it was vibrant, and so will many others, sorry Doug ( hope your on the mend after your Op ) All the best ED
