When I started work in the West End, by we were living in Dagenham and I got the bus all the way there & back as the train fare was too much! - one day an old lady was on the bus going home. She sat next to me and had me it fits all the way until she got off somewhere in Canning Town. She said she was a champion gurner and also the champion programme seller at Earls Court. This would have been 1979 and she was old then. I wonder if anyone knows who she was? - I guess gurning, playing spoons etc must have been quite common at one time but by then a rarity?

I have been told "Gurning" is the art of pulling strange faces! They do this a lot in Yorkshire.

Thanks Nell,

Maybe because I saw the woman that time, in my mind I had associated it with Pearly Kings & queens, playing the spoons etc - in other words, I had assumed it was a cockney thing.

I remember there was a gurner in a Chas & Dave video - may have even been the same person.
