Pete,

Many thanks for showing us photographs of your family. It is always nice when one can put a face to a name.

The difference in names on the death certificate of Ellen Ester Murphy for her husband is not at all unusual. The information on the death certificate is what the person reporting the death believes to be true. The are three distinct possibilities.

1. It is quite possible that Ellen Murphy's daughter did not know her fathers full name and guessed it. Most children know their parents as simply Mum or Dad all their lives. For some reason his daughter may have thought his name was Edward Henry. It is not unknown for parents never to tell their children anything about themselves.

2. You have already experienced the problem of people having nicknames. This is very common. I have two neighbours who have been known as Rick and Jimmy all their lives although their real names are Jack and Doris. If people referred to Ellen Murphy's husband by a different nickname, it's more than probable his daughter would have assumed it was his real name.

2. Henry William Wiggins may have changed his name by Deed Poll at some time. Unfortunately there is no register or records kept of changed names by this method except for signing a document in front of a solicitor. As strange as this may seem, this is perfectly legal.

I looked at the church register for the marriage of Ellen Ester Murphy to Henry William Wiggings and can see the signatures of two witnesses. One is a Maud Murphy, and the other is Henry A Wiggins. It would appear that your assumption that Henry Alfred Wiggins being Dave's great grandfather is correct.

Hi Mick

Thanks again for the info.  You mentioned a website you subscribe to.  I've seen several listed on the web an wondered if you might recommend one?

Cheers

Pete,

I use Ancestry.co.uk and have an annual Worldwide subscription. This is slightly pricey but I usually manage to negotiate a much more reasonable rate with them. Ancestry is however my hobby and sometimes one pays a little more for our interests. This however does give me unlimited access to every document and record worldwide that Ancestry has and that it quite vast. There are lower levels of subscription for those who are say just interested in UK records.

Although I have not used them, there are numbers of other commercial sites. The key thing to avoid in my opinion is where you have a pay per view system. Anyone experienced in genealogy will know that you end up looking at many documents and records that prove to be false leads. If you have to pay for every record you look at even though it eventually turns out to be irrelevant, that can prove quite expensive.

I also upgraded by computer family tree software a few months ago to Family Tree Maker 2012 (FTM2012). The advantage this has it that it automatically synchronises my family tree on my home computer with my public tree on Ancestry. Any change I make to either tree automatically updates the other including photographs and copies of documents.

Hi Mick

Apologies for delay in pcking up the thread and many thanks for the advice.  Seems you might have solved my wife's dilemma on what to get me for Christmas.  You've set me off on the path nicely and I'm very grateful to you and the others for the guidance.

I'll update in due course, especially if I find any "skeletons".

Best wishes

Pete

Cry Hi Pete - My wife Alison and I worked with Dave Wiggins in the Co-operative Bank in the late 1970's. We were blissfully unaware of his death. We had assumed he would still be at James Riley Point with a big pair of binoculars set up for the olympics. All the more of a shock as he was our age. I was going to see if I could find him to ask if he knew how easy it was to park near Pudding Lane DLR, as we are taking the dogs there and meeting freinds later in January.
I still tell the story of David paying money into the Bank of England on behalf of the bank, but somebody had messed the paperwork up meaning the Bank of England gave David £170,000 in a plastic bag to take back to work. At this time a typical 2up 2down was about £10000. But he was very honest, and caring, one of life's good guys.
We would appreciate any information you feel you can pass on.
Philip & Alison Ridealgh
