HI
Does anyone know whats going to happen to the old booking hall stratford station (built i think in the 1930s) tiled.   I was on Stratford station the other day and noticed it was still there!  there used to be next door offices for the Railway police,Does anyone Remember, are the offices still there?
I cant believe how much the station has altered ,i was standing with my mate who i have known for fifty years, just about where the platform was for the North woolwich line, i remember getting a diesel train with my mate about 1963, it was like a little country station, with a station master with his whistle and flag, i think it was called stratford low level!  Standing here now in 2011 looking at the station with its big glass dome, seems unreal.   It reminds me of the programme that used to be on in the 70/80  s,(Sapphire and Steel )starring Joanna lumley and David McCullum when they used to go into different time zones!!
All for now Barry

I remember the police office next to the station entrance also, the tunnel entrance into the railway works, which was next to the office is that still there. Not having been their for over 30 years I have wrongly assumed that this was still the entrance to the station.

This photo was taken only a few weeks ago, but already this view has changed as the heart of Station entrance area is ripped up along with most of the Bus station, shows, if you follow the red line, roughly the route of the tunnel. Every day this area looks like a Beehive with hundreds of men (and some Women) in bright yellow site jackets rushing around to get the work finished.

Next week the DLR should be opening (30th) and by mid September the massive Westfield shopping center and bus station is due to open.

There is something major due to happen tonight as Stratford High Street is closed off from midnight to 5am according to a large electronic sign which has recently arrived by the entrance to the Stratford Mall, plus on Sunday the new Olympic Bridge by the entrance to Carpenters road is due to be put in place.

The site workers look like an invading army, they are everywhere, even having their meals in the open air cafe in the high street (what happened to the old days, a sausage sandwich and a large mug of tea in the site canteen), they certainly make the area colourful, plus with their company names on their jackets and Helmits, it is like a giant mobile advertisement (in fact with no Fluorescent jacket, you feel like you do not belong)!

Seems the planned opening of the DLR from Canning Town to Stratford today has not happend.

All the Staff at Stratford will say is a`unnamed`problem has developed.

The staff have been told there will be another attempt to introduce this service Tomorrow 31st.

Meanwhile the test units keep running up and down about once an Hour.

See attached photo of a DLR Two Car Unit by Britannia Village at Silvertown.

If it does not `kick-in` by the 13th September when Westfield is due to open there will be a lot if Red-faces at TfL!

Hi,

The old ticket hall is still there but all the interior has been removed it's just an empty space. Where you used to be able to cross underneath Great Eastern st into the old shopping centre that has been blocked off and there is an exit by the British Transport Police station.
I think it is going to be used as an emergency exit

Maybe you saw this thread about my granddad who was a train driver based at Stratford from around 1917 - 1967

http://newhamstory.com/forums/index.php/topic,2151.0.html

Even when we were kids he still wore a 'granddad shirt' you can attach a collar to - (no idea where he still managed to buy them Smiley ) and a suit waistcoat with a pocket watch - even at home Smiley and his highly polished shoes (size 13 Churches that he had to order specially)

I also remember the taxi rank up a few stairs on the right as you were leaving.

I think a girl was murdered there in the eighties??

Is the long tunnel that you had to walk down still there because I dont think they have changed the position of the stairs up to the platform so it should be directly behind you, there is a door ther now...... I'd love to take a look.....
