My Grandma was a toilet attendant in Leyton - she retired in the 60s. She was my mum's stepmother and very upright & Victorian. She was a very particular woman at home - ie checking my mum's dusting (woebetide my mum if her stepmum ran her finger along the mantelpiece and it had dust on!

) So I imagine 'her' toilets would also have been gleaming.
PS - I remember the old toilets outside the Co-op in East Ham 'Wash & Brush up 6d"

I also remember the toilets outside East Ham market used to stink - it made your eyes water! - I remember they were near the open-fronted shop where my mum bought cat food cut from a slab and also melts that were fed raw.
Another smelly one I remember was in High Street South. Something I have never seen before, but the toilet was built onto the side of the pub - ie the door was on the street. The smell as you walked past knocked your head off - probably not-too-clean and used by a lot of drunks missing the X

(may have been the Hammers? - As I remember it, it was past Central Park before East Ham Mortuary)
