Just for info the clock that used to be situated outside Stratford station has now been relocated to Maryland point. It was installed on the 9th of march. I wonder if the old public loos are intact under the paving or did they get filled in?

Interesting!

Think we need a picture.  I'll take one when I pass there next.

Saw it yesterday. I hope they're not using the old clock-faces, as they were impossible to read the time!

I don't recall that they filled in the old public loos. I think that's why they keep having subsidence problems.

It won't keep any time at all at the moment, perhaps there waiting for the cement to dry.

Just as an update still no face in the "Time Spiral" can't really call it a clock as it reads half past fresh air!.......

I could see a clock face with the right time when I went through Maryland Station on the train this morning, not sure if the other two faces have been put in yet.

Hope they do not dig to low, the old Underground Public Toilets were there!!

On the subject of Public loos, my Uncle was one of the Loo Keepers (or what ever they were called in the early 1960`s), and they were like an Underground Palace, all the pipework would be polished. along with the frames and the doors, he wore a peakcap with the West Ham Council badge on it, floors were washed a couple of times a day and there was never a smell. Now if you are unfoutnate to need a loo, even if one can be found, they are not of the same high standard, well done Uncle Bill!

Hi Robert,
You mentioning your Uncle being a toilet attendant got me thinking of some of those jobs that were carried out in the 30/40s.My Uncle use to be Dustman as we called them then, now I suppose it's a Refuse collector, he was only about 5ft.tall and I often wonder how he managed to pick up those metal dustbins which mainly contained all the ashes from those coal fires. I remember him coming in at Christmas and tipping his cap out on the table which had all the pennies and halfpennies in it that people had given him. but I don't remember seeing any silver. Those were also the days when the roads could be swept clean (Not many cars parked) and they used a broom and shovel, now when they do manage to sweep the road I think they use 2 pieces of board to pick up most of the rubbish. The digging around the base seems to be installation of lighting......... I think they might be ok where they are digging, if my memory is right the toilets were over the other side I dont know if they went under the whole roundabout?? but I maybe wrong
But I will monitor it to see if anyone slides into oblivion!! : )

Well, that, probably, is the reason that Angel Lane, Stratford has gone. No angels around there now.

Bert.
