Lou

I realise it is almost 18 months since your original post. In 1973 I think there were 2 Local Newspapers covering the East Ham area, The Newham Recorder and The Stratford Express. The Newham recorder is still printed in 2012 but I am unsure about The Stratford Express which was published at one time by Wilson & Whitworth.

My uncle Ron & aunt Brenda lived in Haldane Road from the 60s to the 90s when they moved to Witham. I will ask my mum to ask them what papers they had when they lived there. Brenda used to teach advanced swimming at East Ham town hall baths.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think the Newham Recorder was published in 1973. The main weekly paper at that time was, I'm sure, the Stratford Express that also published different overprinted named editions for various areas. I'm not sure when the two boroughs merged in order to be able to create the Newham Recorder?

Newham was created in the 1966 local government re-organisation. I think the Newham Recorder first appeared a year or two later. Before that the Ilford Recorder had a local edition for East Ham.

Just found small quote on line so I was obviously wrong in my assumptions:

"The Heartbeat of Newham"

"The Newham Recorder was formed back in 1968, three years after the old County Boroughs of East Ham and West     Ham were brought together to form the London Borough of Newham. Prior to that , since the early 1900’s there had been the old East Ham Recorder, which was a slip edition of our sister paper , the Ilford Recorder.

"The paper quickly established itself as THE newspaper in the community and it acquired an unrivalled reputation for campaigning on behalf of its readers. Wherever important issues have arisen, the Recorder has been at the heart of the action."
