On reading the report on the Oklahoma tornado, where children died of drowning in their school basement when water-pipes burst, I was reminded of what may be an apocryphal tale.  I was told, probably when I was about 8, that a number of people died during the war when they sheltered in a basement of a store adjacent to Forest Gate station which had caught fire during an air-raid.  The basement became flooded when the fire-brigade dowsed the flames.
Does anyone know if this is fact?

The ditty that MichaelH quoted was about Tate and Lyles. It is actually the name of a book about the 100 years of West Ham as a borough, that is if my memory serves me well. I had the book, but lent it out and never got it back.

Hi Kathy

Just seen your comment but still no luck finding Katherine however did find Valerie I J Denny born 1953 in Islington and mothers maiden name is shown also as DENNY so could be right one but there doesn't appear to be a marriage record for Valerie at least not in the UK.

So far nobody has mentioned that a lot of the filmimg for `Full Metel Jacket` was there when great sections of the old site was transformed to a Viet-con Village and then Blown up. (Might be a bit too adult for years 6!).

Thanks for all your help.

Here is a little update

Edward was definitely Edward Hyde. He was killed in WW1 and I have now got a photo of his grave in Laventie Cemetery,  France. This was kindly sent to me by a man who lived nearby to the cemetery.

Edwin belongs to another section of the Hyde family which I shall follow up, now that I have the direct line back to 1610.

I have been very fortunate to have help from various sources to manage to get back as far as I have. All of this help has been greatly appreciated.

It was hoped that my husband and I could visit Edwards grave but that is not possible now so it will be our Sons that will visit eventually.
