1  The Newham Story / Historical Newham / Re: Dental Surgery in West Ham Lane? on: 10 April, 2013, 08:05:16 PM
Hi
Yes i remember the dentists surgery well, i used to go there when i was kid yes it was next door to the registry office on the site where the medical Center is now, all it was then was a wooden shed, i remember they used to put a big spring in your mouth to keep it open , they also used put a big rubber gas mask over your face to knock you out ,the gas had a funny smell and taste the dentist used to talk to the nurse and their voice,s would echo and then you were gone.
There was some other medical sheds down west ham lane in between what was Queen Mary,s and the Town hall, they were pulled down and the site was turned into a car park this was opposite Victoria st.

Hi, Thanks for the feed back guys,   i cant believe how long the bus routes were in those day,s ?   Shocked i wonder how many journeys the bus crews done on a shift? what about when they wanted to spend a penny Undecided,
Another place we used to get a bus to when we were kids was the boating lake at the Rising sun pub near whipps cross, i think there used to be canoes on there ? can anyone else remember it.

what i find amazing now is me and my mate started these adventures when we were about 7 years old,can you imagine that now? we never had much money , we used to knock on peoples doors for a drink of water, and then go scrumping Grin
5  The Newham Story / Newham memories and nostalgia / Bus route. 10 on: 24 December, 2012, 10:16:34 PM
Hi,  can anyone remember the route the no 10 bus took, i remember me and my mate getting the bus at stratford broadway in the early 1960,s , we got it all the way to Abridge this was in those hot summer days we really thought we were miles away in the countryside walking through the fields.
i think it went to leytonstone , but i cant remember what route it took to Abridge.

I know the route 10 stopped but cant remember when? i think its running somewhere else in London now.

Happy new Year to you all.

Hi Les , i think i was there for from 60 to 62, then to stratford green, loved the playground on the roof, loved chapel st  my aunts and uncles lived near the Globe pub on the corner of langthorne street, Butcher family, before my time though ? do you remember Quebec st  i think they were small cottage type houses my memory.s a bit misty now, i remember a sweet shop at the start of chapel st corner of Paul st called Bills at the top of chapel st was a rag and bone factory and another sweet shop, a small chapel next to a little road where the council kept their small dustcarts , Rokeby schools playground was on top of this lot , my mum used to talk about Sargent's the bakers down chapel street  and may.s buildings , i remember the old houses being demolished i remember seeing the blokes standing on the roof with the sledge hammers and saying to my mum that's what i want to do when i grow up, she saidyou don't want to do that you will get lots of dust in your lungs, things that stay in your memory! i cant remember what i done yesterday ha ha,
Barry have been trying to get a photo of bridge rd for ages no one seems to have one as of yet?

cheers  Poppy
